Essential Oil Educator

Megan Friedrich and daughter

I started using essential oils as a hobby and quickly realized they were far more than an alternative to incense, which is what I thought initially. I was excited to discover texts describing their mechanisms of action and quickly delved into their chemistry and pharmacology.

Because oils are labeled as “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) by the FDA it was not surprising that there are not many clinical trials, since clinical trials primarily assess safety & efficacy for regulatory purposes and oils are already deemed safe. That still left the question of efficacy to which I had to make an educated guess based on the chemistry & pharmacology. The chemistry and mechanisms of action made sense; in theory these oils COULD work. So the last thing was to try them, knowing that it was unlikely to cause harm. After experiencing physical and emotional benefits I was sold on incorporating oils into my life. I also felt compelled to do something more, recognizing there is a need for essential oil education which could benefit from an understanding of chemistry, pharmacology, health conditions and potential interactions with concurrent medications.

I began to ponder the idea of a pharmacist “crossing-over” to alternative medicine and how that could benefit people, many of whom concurrently use alternative and conventional therapy. The next thing was to find a company with a high quality product that aligned with my research on oils and ideally also aligned with my professional values. DoTERRA has done all of those things, and I was particularly impressed by doTERRA’s dedication to quality and transparency.

I am very excited to be a part of the Healing Passages team and for this opportunity to share essential oils with others!
