Group prenatals are a hallmark of Willowsong’s care. There are six two-hour sessions to choose from throughout your pregnancy journey. The first hour, clients meet and greet and enjoy an engaging group model of care where the midwife measures bellies, listens to fetal heart tones, and checks blood pressures. The second hour is set aside for circle time to discuss the topic of the day. Experienced and new clients in attendance share their experiences, thoughts, and questions, bringing them closer to their village. Fathers or other support persons are welcome!
Each session runs from 4:00pm-6:00pm on rotating Thursday and Friday evenings; you may review the topics and dates below. **Please call or email the clinic if you are interested in signing up**
PRENATAL GROUP DISCUSSION TOPICS
Home & Birth Center Birth 101: What to expect from your team!
2017 SESSION DATES: 1/26, 4/14, 7/7, 9/28, 12/28
This class takes clients new to our practice, through the basics of out-of-hospital birth. We cover what clients can expect from the Willowsong team during early labor, as labor becomes more active, birth, and the first few hours post birth. Then we cover what your Willowsong team expects from YOU, the client, during early labor, as labor becomes more active, birth, and the first few hours post birth. We bring out our birth kit for all to see, set up a resuscitation area, and lay out the newborn exam equipment just as we will do it in your home or in our Center.
Physiological Birth: The roots, the design, the wisdom of the body!
2017 SESSION DATES: 2/2, 4/28, 7/21, 10/13
Many women come to us with a desire to reconnect with their very own birth wisdom, but really have no idea what that is! They may never have seen another woman birth without intervention or perhaps outside a hospital. All they know about birth is what is depicted in the media. Often, they look to their mothers, sisters and grandmothers to only find that they too have no idea what it means to have a ‘natural’ birth! In our culture, a ‘natural birth’ means ‘they did it without drugs’ or ‘it came out vaginally’—but to us, that is far from what it means to birth naturally, in the purist, physiological sense. The midwives will share their experiences with undisturbed, physiological birth in early labor, active/transition labor, 2nd stage pushing, birth, 3rd stage placenta and 4th stage transition to life and motherhood. This process will be dynamically contrasted with a ‘typical’ natural birth in the current medical environment.
Complications: When the unexpected happens at birth! Part I
2017 SESSION DATES: 2/17, 5/11, 8/4, 10/27
Always a popular group for newbies and experienced mamas alike, the midwives address the most common concerns that our clients have in regards to birth complications. We walk you through: stalled, active labor; non-encouraging fetal heart tones; prolapsed cord; shoulder dystocia; nuchal cord; newborn resuscitation; postpartum hemorrhage; retained placenta; lacerations and repair; poor newborn transition; and how a transfer to the hospital occurs. Any other concerns brought up by the group are also addressed. This session is typically very reassuring for all attendees.
Complications: Couples share their experiences. Part II
2017 SESSION DATES: 3/3, 5/26, 8/17, 11/9
If the midwives teach anything, it is that pregnancy and birth are unpredictable, meaning the outcome cannot be controlled. We teach the power of surrender, taking care of ourselves with nutrition and living stress-free lives and connecting with our greater community. This session is facilitated by past clients who have had the unexpected happen at their birth. It is an opportunity for current clients to hear what happened, how they coped, and how they healed post birth from their experience.
MamaMoon Care: Learn what you don’t know about taking care of the new mother!
2017 SESSION DATES: 3/16, 6/9, 9/1, 12/1

BabyMoon Care: Learn what you don’t know about taking care of your new bundle!
2017 SESSION DATES: 1/12, 3/31, 6/22, 9/15, 12/15
We have a wonderful way of making newborn baby care seem easy by bringing you back to the way nature designed this beautiful relationship to be! We cannot talk about the mama without talking about her newborn—an extension of her body for the first nine months after birth. We start the class from birth onward, discussing all the things your Willowsong Team will do to facilitate the physiological newborn stage. Come explore with us the concepts of the ‘Magical Hour’, the first hour after birth and the newborn’s nine instinctive stages; and NINO, ‘nine months in’, ‘nine months out’, and how it will influence your mothering for the first year post birth!
